Who are You becoming?
Continuing the exploration of ‘The Sermon on the Mount,’ Martin O’Brien delves into the essence of Jesus' teachings, particularly focusing on Matthew 5:17-20. Jesus's message wasn't to abolish the law but to fulfil its true purpose, which is rooted in love for God and others.
Key Points:
1. Understanding Jesus's Mission: Jesus clarified that he didn't come to dismantle the law but to fulfill it. The law's original intent was to guide people in loving God wholeheartedly and treating others with respect and care. However, over time, it had been distorted by religious leaders for personal gain.
2. Returning to the Heart of the Law: Jesus urged a return to the heart of the law, emphasizing its foundational principles found in passages like Deuteronomy 5 & 6. These laws were not meant to be legalistic rules but guides for living in harmony with God and others.
3. Jesus as the Fulfillment: Numerous scriptures highlight Jesus as the fulfillment of the prophecies and the law itself. His life, teachings, and actions align with the promises of the Old Testament, demonstrating God's faithfulness.
4. The Call to Greater Righteousness: Jesus challenges his followers to surpass the righteousness of the religious leaders, emphasizing a righteousness that stems from the heart. It's not merely about obeying outward commands but about a transformation of character rooted in love for God and others.
5. Becoming More Loving: The ultimate question posed is, "Who are you becoming?" Becoming more loving is central to this journey. Love, as exemplified by Jesus, is the hallmark of true discipleship. It's through our love for one another that the world recognises us as followers of Christ.
The call to discipleship is a call to transformation. As we grow in love for God and others, we embody the righteousness that Jesus preached. Let us walk in the footsteps of our Lord, becoming more loving each day, and thereby shining the light of Christ to the world around us.
